it was a long road, the coming of this wedding. it went through many iterations and became a fairytale on the water in downtown havre de grace. i'd never seen her smiling as much as she did that day. and his face held undisguised awe at her loveliness. the simple ceremony and small dinner conveyed everything they'd hoped ~ their love for each other and their hope for the future. just as it should be.

they met at the bar. sometimes they'd work together on the same shifts and sometimes one would just hang out while the other worked. always talking. always friendly. he'd bring a girl with him now and again and that would make her a little jealous. he talked about her a lot, though, when he wasn't at work. his friends thought he'd never ask her out, he was just too shy and she was just that gregarious. she never thought she'd date someone younger, so it wasn't even on her radar, except for that little pang of jealousy now and again.

funny how sometimes our emotions tell us so much more than we're willing to admit to ourselves.

his sister had given him some time on a dating website that was about to expire. he wasn't all that sad about it, though, because it hadn't really helped him find someone special. she had a free weekend subscription to a dating website but wasn't holding her breath. that's how they met, in that brief period of time when the stars aligned. on their first date he brought a dozen roses to the place they would meet, but gave her only one when she arrived for dinner, thinking that if it went well, he'd give her the other eleven. six months later they were engaged.

on the day of the wedding he gave her another dozen roses.

i've said it many times, but over the last year i've had some incredible opportunities to work with families and children i adore. i first met lucia when she was 3 months old, then again just after she turned 6 months, and now, she's a year. it makes my heart glad to see her as she grows ~ learning to walk, becoming more and more independent. but always she has those eyes i could just fall into. she may be moving with her parents to malawi by the end of the year; if that happens i will be so happy for her, but will miss her terribly!

she says they're one of those sickening internet romance success stories. but really, they're so much more than that.

they did meet over the internet, but just as soon as they'd met virtually, he left with the peace corps. they kept in touch for two and half years, in an out of relationships with other people always maintaining their friendship online. two and a half years of emails and online chatting. two and half years and never having met in person. when he returned to the united states, it was time to meet. and on august 22, 2009, that peace corps boy and that girl who knows how to shear a sheep and spin her own wool met in washington, d.c. the connection was immediate, the transition from friend to so much more faster than either would have imagined.

by the summer of 2010 they'd moved in together and were were facing a difficult situation ~ he was moving to vermont to attend law school. would she go with him? would she stay in baltimore? where would their relationship go with another three years apart?

on the night he proposed, he cooked for her a gourmet french meal, surprising her with a heart-felt speech and a beautiful sapphire ring. their life together, a life of cooking, sailing, music and arts festivals, camping, and home-brewing, wouldn't end. it would simply start a new phase.

in january i had the pleasure of photographing beautiful baby lily as a newborn and i was so so very flattered when her family asked if i would photograph her again at 6 months. she's an amazing child with the brightest eyes and the most expressive face. it's a wonder to me to see how much she's grown. here is her 6 month session ~ i hope you enjoy it as much i did!

this is sammy. i've worked with sammy's family a few times in the last year ~ last year's holiday photos, his big brother ben's birthday, that kind of thing. sammy had his first birthday this summer and we got together to capture some cake moments and document where he is now with his world. i was so surprised to see, when he got out of the car, how much hair he'd grown and how tall he'd gotten. he'd even started walking; at our first meeting, he could barely sit up by himself. this is one of the joys of working with a family over time ~ seeing how their kids are growing and changing and documenting that. the stories the photos tell such great stories and it's such an honor for me to be able to capture them. so, enjoy sammy! maybe you'll be seeing he and his brother again soon!

last fall i donated a wedding and engagement session package to wish upon a wedding for their annual auction fundraiser. alice & dennis won that auction. they are such a sweet and wonderful couple and i'm so excited to get the chance to work with them. we had a fun afternoon in late june (on the same day alice completed a triathlon, no less) wandering around by the korean war memorial and along caton's waterfront. i cannot wait until their wedding in september!

i worked with alexis & dan on their mid-june wedding in federal hill. it was a small casual affair that got re-planned and re-worked (including a complete change of venue) 4 days before the ceremony was to happen. first i met with the families in federal hill for family pictures and then alexis, dan and i snuck off for a bit for photos of just the two of them. before too long we made our way to the marriott inner harbor at camden yards for the ceremony and simple dinner reception. the couple put a lot of thought and effort into bringing some real baltimore touches into the reception, including using crabs and flamingos in the decorations. alexis & dan are so easy together and it really reflected in the way they carried themselves through the entire day. and for as calm as they were, dan just *might* have shed a tear during the ceremony. enjoy a few of my favorites from the afternoon!

recently, my cousin anne married her love sean in fairfax, virginia. for a variety of reasons, my aunt geri asked if i would come to photograph the girls getting ready at the salon and take some photos at the house before the ceremony. i was more than happy to help out ~ anne was a lovely bride and working with the cousins is always fun. and even though i wasn't responsible for the entire wedding, working during the getting ready just reminded me, once again, that amazing opportunities for fantastic photos happen all day on a wedding. check out the photo of sean's text message to anne while she was getting her hair done! enjoy a few from the day (including some reception details i couldn't help but take some shots of!).

june has been a whirlwind. there was a wedding every weekend and family portraits and nicu volunteering. there were visits from the mid-west family, a trip to the mid-west for the painter, dog sitting for 10 days in annapolis, and a conference in ocean city. there was good news, and better news, and the most amazing news ever. we haven't slowed down and it's felt kind of nuts. but that's how we roll, this lunatic family of mine.

ashley & ian have been one of my favorite couples to work with this year, and on june 4th i had the pleasure of spending the entire day with them as they prepared for and celebrated their wedding on the lawn at the historic baldwin hall. you may remember this beautiful pair from their engagement session at the baltimore museum of industry in april. they are rather extraordinary together ~ such joy in each other's company, such a profound and clear understanding of each other and each other's needs. they are amazing to watch together and even more amazing to photograph. i brought kathleen mccullough along with me to capture the day of details and laughter and honoring loved ones. some of my favorite details of the day: the pocket watch ashley tied to her bouquet she had given to her father years ago; having the opportunity to photograph ashley, her mother, her grandmother, and her 96 year old great-grandmother together; the cake topper that belonged to ashley's mother; the groom's cake made to look like books important to ian (and a total surprise to him); and the little pops of yellow found all over the reception site. it's been an adventure, getting to know this family, and at the end of the night when ashley's mother told me i was like a part of the family, my heart could not have been happier. best wishes, ashley & ian!
